W.W. Gardening 101 Class

Want to start a garden, but it all seems overwhelming, and you don't know where to start? We will provide you with the information you need to get started and show you various ways to create a productive garden tailored to your specific needs and space.

What will you learn?

  • The three big gardening foundations: Soil, Sun, and Water
  • What are the different types of gardens, and what are their benefits?
  • Gardening with what you have in the location or space you have available.
  • How starting a garden from the soil up is essential. Discover how to cultivate healthy soil using composting and vermiculture techniques.
  • Seeds vs Plants- covering the basics
  • Seedling growing mixture/medium
  • How to get more food in a small space for multiple seasons.

The Gardening 101 Class and What is Included:

  • $100 per person, with a $50 add-on available for one additional person. Limited spots are available to keep the class as personal as possible.
  • A tour of the W.W. Cottage Homestead garden zones includes annual and perennial gardens, patio-raised bed gardens, herbal gardens, and pollinator gardens.
  • One great benefit of touring the homestead gardens is seeing the real-life application of the information in person about the topics we are covering. You will also have a chance to ask questions throughout the tour.
  • You will receive a Wildwood Wonder Homestead: Gardening 101 take-home packet that includes all the information covered in the class. *If you have an add-on person attending with you, only one packet will be provided.
  • We still highly encourage you to write notes on the little nuggets we will share!
  • Bottled water will be provided. Berkey-filtered drinking water will also be available if you bring a refillable bottle. There are plenty of sitting areas and chairs for anyone needing a rest.
  • Depending on the weather and temperature, the class will take place in our outside classroom or under a tent canopy, with tables and chairs provided for everyone.

Basic Class Information:

  • The class will start at 2 p.m. The majority of the garden areas are in the shade during this time of day.
  • Since the class is designed for an educational experience, we kindly request that parents be responsible for and keep their children close.
  • The class will last approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, and you will be standing and sitting throughout the tour and class.
  • The tour and class are entirely outside; please be prepared for any weather conditions. Bring a raincoat, boots, or shoes for mud, sunscreen, a battery-operated fan, and bug spray.
  • Our homestead and gardens are located on a hillside and uneven terrain, but most of the garden tours can be observed from a porch location.
  • The homestead is fifteen minutes from Booneville, MS. There are several local food selections for lunch in town, or you can visit wonderful parks for a lunch picnic!
